Dr. Jian Song received his PhD degrees from Electronic Engineering Department, Tsinghua University, China in 1995 and then conducted Postdoctoral research work in The Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Waterloo, Canada before working with Hughes Network Systems in USA between 1998 and 2005. He has been a full professor at Tsinghua University since 2005 is now the directory of DTV technical R&D center.
Dr. Song’s current research interest is in the digital TV broadcasting, network convergence, and PLC areas. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, holds two US and nearly thirty Chinese patents.
Dr. Song is the fellow of IET and senior member of IEEE. He is also the associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting and the vice chairman of ITU-R WP6A.
Title: "PowerLine Communication Prototype using TDS-OFDM and its Potential Applications"
Abstract: Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology has been adopted in various power-line communication (PLC) systems recently as it provides higher spectrum efficiency and is robust to the frequency-selective fading. Time-domain synchronous (TDS-) OFDM technology was proposed as another form of OFDM, and the digital television terrestrial broadcasting standard based on it has been adopted by International Telecommunication Union.
TDS-OFDM uses the known pseudo random binary sequence in front of each OFDM symbol to serve as both the guard interval to mitigate the multipath effect and the training sequence for the channel estimation. With simple time-domain processing, the system synchronization can be achieved quickly and also higher spectrum efficiency can be expected.
This talk will give technical review on TDS-OFDM technology and the PLC system prototypes, the potential applications of PLC are also briefly introduced.
